Monday's Cubs Win Sets Records, Reflects Successful April Despite Setbacks

The Chicago Cubs have put together one of the greatest months of baseball to start a season in franchise history. On top of that, they're doing it with numerous key injuries to players such as Justin Steele, Jordan Wicks, Cody Bellinger, and Seiya Suzuki.

The Craig Counsell effect appears to be in full swing. As noted by the club, Monday's 3-1 comeback triumph marked their 18th win of the season and 18th victory in April. With the win in New York, thanks to Christopher Morel's late two-run blast, the Cubs officially recorded the best April in team history.

This statistic is somewhat amazing. Not even the super team in 2016 set the record for the franchise. Instead, the 2024 Cubs are leading the way with a hot start to the season.

The Cubs' 18th win of the season came from some late-inning heroics, but Jameson Taillon's performance can't be understated. By tossing 7.1 innings, he helped save the bullpen, which is also afflicted by injuries. The Cubs are now 11-0 when their starting pitchers go at least 5.1 innings this season.

The Cubs are finding the key to success. When the starting rotation is on, the offense can do just enough to pick up big wins early on. With Tuesday's game marking their April finale, the Cubs can build on their success in the first full month of the season and increase their lead in the NL Central.

The Cubs and Mets do battle at 6:10 PM CDT on Tuesday from Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Javier Assad will take the bump against New York's Sean Manaea as the North Siders look to tack on another win to their already historic April.
