HC change could be just what Titans WR Treylon Burks needs

Tennessee Titans receiver Treylon Burks has had a disappointing start to his NFL career.

Compared to former Titan A.J. Brown, who was traded to the Eagles for the No. 18 pick that was used on Burks in 2022, the Titans WR has battled a series of injuries plus a bout with asthma as a rookie. He’s been limited to just 22 games during his first two seasons, collecting 49 catches for 665 yards and one TD.

Meanwhile Brown, who just signed a massive three-year, $96M extension with Philadelphia, has 194 catches for 2,952 yards and 18 TDs in two seasons with the team and was a pivotal piece in the Eagles' run to Super Bowl LVII.

But the good news for the 24-year-old wideout is his new head coach Brian Callahan is an offensive guru who helped Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins produce multiple 1,000-yard seasons when he was offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals.

So, if there’s a coach that can help Burks reach his potential, it’s him.

“He’s going to do a little bit of everything,” Callahan said during a radio interview with 104.5 The Zone. “… He’ll be able to do some stuff outside. Ultimately, it’s my role and our coaching staff’s role to find a handful of things that he can really help us with and highlight those as much as possible. Some of them might be in the slot, some of them might be outside, but I’m fired up and I think he’s got a chance to help us.”

Burks showed flashes of being a potential No. 1 WR as a rookie. He finished with 33 receptions on 54 targets with 444 yards and a touchdown.

However, Year 2 was a bit of a rougher road, and Burks was limited to only 16 catches and 221 yards while dealing with a concussion that made him miss multiple games and an LCL sprain in his left knee.

Now fully healthy, Callahan stated he’s encouraged by what he’s seen from Burks during the Titans’ voluntary offseason workouts.

“He's really had a fantastic start to the offseason program,” Callahan added. “… He's done a great job of learning and getting a bunch of different things down. … I’m optimistic about him contributing for us, and I think he's gone about it the right way. So, I have a lot of respect for how he started off.”

Under Callahan's guidance, Chase posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons while scoring 29 touchdowns. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021.

Higgins also posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2021 and 2022, and he totaled 257 receptions and scoring 25 touchdowns in his four years under Callahan.
